Course Description

Dr. Susan Feneck gives insight into what Juvenile Justice means to the audience and how to avoid what could potentially be a very unpleasant experience if not guided properly. Some of the topic areas that will be discussed during the introduction include, but are not limited to: youth and their response to the juvenile justice system; the effects it has on youth’s self-esteem as well as helpful hints to the parent/guardian on how to better understand the system and who they can reach out to.

During the rest of the course, Dr. Feneck touches on the previously mentioned topic areas as well as getting into more detail on topics regarding the steps/ procedures that are most often taken when a youth is brought into custody. She discusses the different types of probation and various types of courts. It’s when she discusses the areas of families in juvenile justice and how you can help as a parent is when she digs deep into the support mechanisms and both the positive and negative effects they can have on your child.

Probably one of the most interesting topics that Dr. Feneck discusses is understanding mental health and juvenile justice. She discusses how youth get diagnosed, some of the common diagnosis that are ‘typical’ for detained youth and some of the psychotropic medications they are prescribed. She touches on self-mutilating behaviors and signs and symptoms of suicidal ideations.

Towards the end of this course, Dr. Feneck discusses ways to get involved and make changes in your child’s life both while they are being detained as well as when they are released either to a non-secure facility, a foster home, or back into your home. There is help and there is hope.
